African scholars have called on governments and policymakers across the continent to urgently address the risks of artificial intelligence (AI) bias in migration management systems.
Speaking at a recent academic forum, the dons warned that unchecked reliance on AI-driven technologies for migration control could reinforce discrimination, exclude vulnerable groups, and create systemic injustices
.
They noted that while AI offers opportunities to streamline visa processing, border management, and data analysis, the technology often reflects the biases embedded in its programming and datasets. This, they said, can lead to unfair profiling, wrongful rejections, and the marginalization of certain communities.
The academics urged African nations to take proactive steps by developing local ethical guidelines, investing in inclusive data, and ensuring human oversight in migration-related decision-making. They also emphasized the importance of cross-border collaboration in creating AI frameworks that protect human rights while advancing the continent’s digital transformation.
