At least 40 people have been reported missing after a passenger boat capsized in Sokoto State, northwest Nigeria, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.
The ill-fated vessel, carrying traders and villagers, was traveling along the Shagari River when it overturned due to suspected overloading and strong currents. Local divers and emergency services have since launched a search-and-rescue operation.
The Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said some survivors were rescued, but dozens remain unaccounted for. Officials also highlighted the recurring risks of water transport in Nigeria’s rural communities, where poor safety standards and overloading often contribute to such tragedies.
Incidents of boat mishaps are frequent in Nigeria’s riverine regions, raising concerns about enforcement of maritime safety regulations.
Authorities have urged calm while assuring families of missing persons that search efforts are ongoing.
